Dress

From the beginning of Japanese settlement in southern Alberta, the Issei sought to blend in with their neighbours and adopted western dress. Traditional Japanese dress was abandoned as everyday wear but remained in use for dance, plays and skits in the temple and for special occasions.

A man’s kimono is usually shorter than a woman’s kimono and is made from darker coloured cloth. It may have a subtle pattern.
